Yes, this caustic comedy/drama is about ice skater Tonya Harding and the infamous attack by “hit men” on her rival Nancy Kerrigan. But it’s really about a whole lot more than that. It’s about the challenges of escaping the life you’re born into, about the anti-blue-collar bias in the skating world, about the dawn of the 24/7 tabloid news cycle, and about the variable nature of “truth.” The movie is inspired by interviews with all the principals, and it’s fascinating to see just how different everyone’s story is. Margot Robbie shines as Tonya, a scrappy young woman who tries to battle her way out of her abusive upbringing but who often can’t get out of her own way.
