    Slater hosts juried show of Connecticut artists

    The Slater Memorial Museum’s 74th annual Connecticut Artists Juried Exhibition is on view through March 16 in the museum’s Converse Art Gallery.

    More than 360 works were submitted by over 180 artists from around the state.

    This year’s juror was Michelle Hargrave, deputy director at the New Britain Museum of American Art.

    The  winners are first place: "Liz" by Sandy Hale, Windham; second place: "Dancing Leaves" by Valerie Andrews Carthwait, Lebanon; third place: "English Walnut Bowl" by Kenneth Guarneri, Preston; and three honorable mentions: "Hanging On" by Roger Beers, New London; "Light and Form" by Elin Dolle, Deep River; "By the Window" by Mary Green La Forge, Lyme; and for the third consecutive year, the Katherine Forest Craft Foundation Prize for Excellence in Fine Craft was awarded to Clement B. Watson of Lebanon for "The Knot" (segmented wood turning). 

    The exhibition is the longest-running juried exhibition of varied forms and media based in a museum in the state. It annually attracts thousands of visitors.

    The Slater, which is part of the Norwich Free Academy at 108 Crescent St. in Norwich, is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tues.-Fri. and 1-4 p.m. Sun. For more information, call (860) 887-2506.
