    Street corner harmony

Gene “Duke of Earl” Chandler will be one of the stars at the Doo-Wopp Hall of Fame Concert at Foxwoods.

What a treat back in those days at Memorial Stadium, 33rd at Ednor, in Baltimore. You'd pay a few bucks to see an Orioles game, then hang around the corner just outside the home plate entrance. After they'd showered and talked to sportswriters, chances were good Pat Dobson, Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally and Earl Weaver would emerge from the dressing room and sing those tight, doo-wop harmonies on “Crying in the Chapel.”

The Orioles, after all, were a pioneer doo-wop group, and —

WAIT! What's that? You say The Orioles doo-woppers and The Baltimore baseball team were two different sets of Orioles?! Well, hell!

Appropriately, then, it'll be the singing Orioles who perform Saturday in Foxwoods' Fox Theater as part of Harvey Robbins' “25th Anniversary Doo-Wopp Hall of Fame Concert.” Also on the bill will be Robbins, Gene “Duke of Earl” Chandler, Randy and the Rainbows, former Platters lead singer Tony Funches and The Shades of Blue.
