Chelsea Groton Foundation spring grants near $100,000

The Chelsea Groton Foundation announced Monday that it gave nearly $100,000 to 59 nonprofits in the region this spring.

Awards totaling $94,550 now bring to $2.1 million the total foundation grants given to community organizations since 1999. Applications are reviewed twice a year.

The largest grant of $20,000 went to Lawrence + Memorial hospital for its capital campaign to build a new cancer center; $5,000 each went to the Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut to help pay for land development in Groton and Waterford Country School to help build a new Otto Graham Gymnasium.

“As a community bank, one of our most important responsibilities is to help improve the overall quality of life in the region,” said Michael Rauh, president and chief executive of Chelsea Groton Bank, which funds the foundation. “We are honored to be able to help area non-profits as they work to achieve their mission and serve the local community.”

Areas covered by the grants include health, social services, education, economic development and arts and culture.

Other grant awards included $2,000 each to Norwich Community Development Corporation, Westerly Area Rest Meals and Higher Edge in New London and $500 each to Healing with Horses at Wildrose Horse Farm in Uncasville and the East Lyme Puppetry Project for summer puppet shows.
