Blumenthal, Murphy introduce 'National Lobster Day' resolution

U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy introduced a Senate resolution Tuesday designating Sept. 25 as “National Lobster Day.”

The Connecticut Democrats were joined by a bipartisan group of senators led by Angus King, a Maine independent, and Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, who backed the effort.

“Connecticut lobsters have been a staple at kitchen tables and an economic boon across New England for generations,” Blumenthal said in a statement. “Unfortunately, this vibrant culinary tradition and the critical industry jobs it supports are threatened by poor environmental conditions in the Long Island Sound.

“I hope that National Lobster Day will serve not only as a celebration of this uniquely New England food, but also as a call to improve the health of the Sound and recognize the livelihoods it supports.”

Murphy said the lobster industry is a big part of Connecticut’s industry and identity.

“It brings in tourists from across the country and generates millions of dollars for the state each year,” he said. “But all of that is at risk because our lobster stocks are declining due to warming oceans and poor conditions in Long Island Sound, and Connecticut fisherman and businesses are suffering because of it. I’m introducing this resolution for the second time so we can get Connecticut’s lobster industry the recognition it deserves.”

The resolution encourages U.S. citizens “to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
