Casinos' slots revenues were down in November

Casino slot-machine revenues slipped in November, with Foxwoods’ falling nearly 7 percent and Mohegan Sun’s down by nearly 1 percent compared with the same month last year.

Foxwoods Resort Casino reported that it "won," or kept, $35.4 million in wagers last month. It kept $38 million in November 2015.

Mohegan Sun's slots win last month was $47.3 million, eight-tenths of a percent less than the $47.7 million it kept the same month last year.

"We had a very good October," said Ray Pineault, Mohegan Sun's president and general manager. Mohegan Sun stepped up promotions and events throughout October in connection with its 20-year anniversary.

"Sometimes, you'll see guests shift their activity from one month to another," he said.

But, Pineault said, the calendar was more likely a factor in his casino's performance. He noted that the year-over-year comparison was complicated by the fact that this November had four Saturdays while November 2015 had five. Casinos typically generate a good portion of their slots revenue on weekends.

"But for the calendar, we would have been up a little bit more than 1 percent," he said.

Foxwoods operated, on average, 4,135 slot machines during November, the second straight month at about that number. In each of the 13 months from September 2015 through September 2016, Foxwoods operated between 4,500 and 4,600 machines. Before that, it operated a greater number of machines.

Mohegan Sun operated 5,120 machines in November, slightly more than it's been averaging in recent months.

Foxwoods sent $9.4 million of its November slots win to the state. Mohegan Sun forwarded $11.8 million.
