Following Saturday's 56-54 victory over Curry College in New London, Coast Guard Academy quarterback Derek Victory gained a new Twitter follower: Curry quarterback Alex Corvese.

The two combined to tie an NCAA Division III record for touchdown passes in a single game with 13, seven for Corvese and six for Victory. Corvese and Victory were named Co-Offensive Players of the Week by the New England Football Conference.

On Wednesday, with Victory picking up another award, the prestigious New England Football Writers' Gold Helmet — sponsored by the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation and awarded at Harvard University — he made sure to remember Corvese.

"He's a really nice guy," Victory said. "You throw seven touchdowns in a game ... it could have easily been me on the other end (of the score). He reached out to me. He wanted to say, 'Good game and congrats on a good career.' I didn't realize he's only a junior. I told him 'Enjoy the last year, man. It'll fly by.'

"I don't want people to forget about his performance. If he didn't have the performance he did, we wouldn't have been throwing so much."

Victory was 32-for-47 passing for 525 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions, adding a seventh touchdown rushing. A senior from Weston, Fla., Victory set or tied seven records in the win, including Coast Guard single-game marks for passing yards (individual and team) and total offense (547). The 525 yards passing sets the NEFC record for an individual and a team.

Victory also tied the program record for passing touchdowns in a single game and set the Bears' career touchdown record with 44.

This season, Victory is 128-for-216 for 1,562 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. He owns 10 school records and has tied another.

Victory is the seventh Coast Guard player to win the Gold Helmet, which is presented each week to the top Division I and top Division II/III football players in New England.

"I didn't even know," Victory said. "Six passing touchdowns, but any other stat than that, geesh. Winning the game was definitely the thing that counted the most to me. ... It's exciting (to win the Gold Helmet). It's overwhelming, to be honest. I didn't think people would make that big of a deal out of Saturday."
