    Local roundup: New London girls ranked No. 1 in state poll again

    New London High School has returned to the top of this week's GameTimeCT/New Haven Register state girls' basketball media poll.

    The Whalers (18-1) replaced Trumbull (17-1), which dropped to third after suffering its first loss of the season last week to Fairfield Warde 54-53. New London received six first-place votes and 340 points while Hartford Capital (12-5) is second with four first-places and 324 points and Trumbull received the other two first-place votes and 312 points.

    Norwich Free Academy (14-4), winners of 10 straight, returned to the Top 10 this week in the 10th sport with 131 points. The Wildcats, who lost to New London 53-37 on Dec. 22, host the Whalers on Tuesday night at 7.

    New London can win the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I title outright with a win while two two rivals will share of the crown if NFA wins. The game will be streamed live on www.theday.com.

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Britney Detuzzi of Old Lyme won three events and the all-around as the Wildcats beat East Lyme/Waterford 139.2-131.9, as both teams reached season-high totals. Detuzzi, a sophomore, won the vault (9.4), bars (8.7) and floor exercise (9.2) and had an all-around of 36.2 points. Elizabeth Heikkinen of East Lyme/Waterford won the balance beam (9.3) and was second in all-around (35.9). Old Lyme's Mary Bolles was third in all-around (34.4). Maranda Ealahan of East Lyme/Waterford (vault) and Old Lyme's Mara Denya (bars) had third-place finishes.

    Women's basketball

    • Coast Guard Academy outscored Merchant Marine 21-10 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 51-45 win in a nonleague game. Gill Gerton had 19 rebounds and 11 points, Zoe Riis-Fallica scored 13 and Breanna Wood had seven rebounds for Coast Guard (9-14). Coast Guard has won six of its last seven. The Bears now hold a commanding 9.5-3.5 lead over Merchant Marine in the Superintendent’s Trophy race with just seven sports left to compete. Kaleigh D'Arcy led Merchant Marine (11-10) with 10 points.

    • Jessica Shepherd had 17 points and four steals, leading Mitchell College to a 74-40 win over Lesley in a New England Collegiate League game. Alexandra Kolb scored 12, Ashleigh Beauford and Allegra Jones had 11 points each, Kate McCormack had six assists and Beauford had nine rebounds for Mitchell (9-13, 9-3). Theresa Pereira led Lesley (7-15, 5-10) with 21 points.

    Men's basketball

    • Domenico Santiago had 19 points and 13 rebounds as Mitchell beat Lesley 94-81 in overtime in an NECC game. Hasani Williams had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Brayvon Young scored 19, Waterford's Geary McLeod and Alan Morgan had nine assists for Mitchell (4-17, 4-8). Devon Mayo had 22 points and 11 rebounds for Lesley (13-9, 7-6).

    Women's swimming

    • Freshman Mary Erb finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke as Connecticut College concluded an impressive three days by finishing third in the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship meet at Bowdoin College. Erb was timed in 2:18.74, the top finish of the final day for the Camels, who finished with a team total of 1,268.5. Williams College won the meet with 1,856 points and Amherst College finished second with 1,367 points.

    Other place-winners for Conn were Valerie Urban in the 1,650 freestyle (third, 17:09.43); Olivia Haskell in the 100 free (third, 51.33); the 400 freestyle relay team of Kulia Klier, Haskell, Juliette Lee and Lily Gribbel (seventh, 3:29.58) and Klier in the 200 backstroke (eighth, 2:04.60).
