    Local roundup: New London's Dillon honored by NEFWA as top player

    New London's AJ Dillon leads the list of 2017 award recipients named by the New England Football Writers Association on Sunday.

    Dillon, a freshman running back at Boston College, has been selected to receive the Harry Agganis/Harold Zimman Award presented to the outstanding player in New England. Dillon has led the Eagles to a 7-5 record by rushing for 1,432 yards on 268 carries with 13 touchdowns. He is averaging over five yards per carry and had five 100 yard games including two games in which he reached at least 200 rushing yards.

    New Hampshire quarterback Trevor Knight and Husson University running back John Smith won the season Gold Helmet Awards as presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation. The Gold Helmet Awards are given to the player deemed to be the player of the year in Division I FBS/FCS and Division II/III.

    Husson's Gabby Price was named the New England College Division Coach of the Year and Yale's coach Tony Reno is the Jack Grinold Division I Coach of the Year. The awards will be presented at the New England Football Writers Captains and Awards Banquet on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at the Montvale Plaza in Stoneham, Mass.     Women's basketball

    • Freshman Casey Walsh scored 17 points, leading Connecticut College to a 73-62 win over Babson in a nonleague game. Mairead Hynes had 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots for Conn (3-1).

    Men's basketball

    • Austin Coene scored 19 points and had nine rebounds as Roger Williams remained unbeaten with a 79-60 win over Connecticut College in a nonleague game. Phil Leotsakos had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists, David Labossiere scored 10 and Dan Draffan came off the bench for 18 points and eight rebounds for Conn (2-2). Rich Pugliese scored 17 for Roger Williams (5-0).

    • Mitchell College lost to SUNY Maritime in a nonleague game, 89-84. Hasani Williams scored 32 points and had 10 rebounds, Brayvon Young and Steffan Brunson had 12 points each and Mack Bertram-Gregory came off the bench to score 10 for Mitchell (1-2).
