Connecticut Sun trade Williams for No. 4 pick in 2016 draft

Curt Miller was enamored with the Connecticut Sun's young roster when he was hired as their new head coach in December, but said there would be some tinkering.

The tinkering began Wednesday as Connecticut acquired the fourth overall pick in April’s WNBA Draft for second-year center Elizabeth Williams.

The Sun received the third overall pick in last September's draft lottery.

“We are excited about the trade with Atlanta allowing us to have two of the top four picks in the deep 2016 WNBA Draft,” Miller said. “It is always hard trading a talented player and great person like Elizabeth Williams, but we believe the draft provides us with a tremendous opportunity to address specific needs.”

Williams was the fourth overall pick in the 2015 draft and played in 21 games. She was just started getting acclimated to the league when she missed the final 12 games with a knee contusion.

“Elizabeth is an amazing individual and a very talented young player who will be missed by our fans,” Sun vice president and general manager Chris Sienko said. “We know she will thrive in Atlanta’s system, but this move gives us a unique opportunity to make a significant impact in what we expect will be a very deep draft."

UConn’s Breanna Stewart (forward) and Moriah Jefferson (guard) and South Carolina guard Tiffany Mitchell are the draft's top three players.

“I think our guard depth could certainly use improvement,” Miller said during a phone interview Tuesday. “I think that every single coach that looked at Connecticut’s roster in anticipation of interviewing for the job thought the same thing.

“I do a mock draft almost every other night and think about what everyone is trying to do.”
