Sun show off a different look in preseason opener

Mohegan — The Connecticut Sun were four minutes into their preseason when Kelsey Bone had an open look up top and made her first career 3-pointer.

    Bone. A 6-foot-4 interior bruiser. Taking 3-pointers.

    Well, that’s different.

“Just one or two (a game), I promise,” Bone said with a laugh after Connecticut beat the Chicago Sky 84-81 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

First-year head coach Curt Miller has an affinity for the 3-ball. He’s known in basketball circles for his offensive mind. He’s said the phrase, “offense is spacing and spacing is offense” so many times since he’s arrived that he may have finally got it tattooed onto his chest.

The Sun’s offense has been offensive the past few seasons, so it was … surreal to watch it embrace Miller-Ball. The Sun's first basket came when Bone fired a pass across the court from right to left to a wide-open Alex Bentley standing behind the 3-point line by the Chicago bench.

Bone may have extended her arm and index finger before Bentley took the shot.

“Absolutely,” Bone said. “If I see her wide open and I pass it and it hits her in the pocket, I’m going to bet my bottom dollar that it’s going down.”

Bone made Connecticut’s next 3-pointer, to the surprise of many.

“Kelsey Bone is a very talented perimeter shooter,” Miller said. “I don’t want her to fall in love with that, but we were working with her taking the game-winning 3-pointer the other day in practice. I joked with her that it wouldn’t be long before she had her first career 3.”

There were more to follow. Rookie Jonquel Jones — all 6-foot-6 of her — nailed a 3-pointer on her second shot. Rookie guard Rachel Banham followed with one of her own, and then Jones again.

It was only the first quarter and already Connecticut had five 3-pointers and, more importantly, led 26-19.

With the likes of rookies Rachel Banham and Morgan Tuck and veterans Shekinna Stricklen, Camille Little and Bentley around, the Sun might have to get #SplashSisters trending on Twitter this summer.

“There’s more than two (or) three (shooters),” Bone said. “The Splash Team, maybe? I don’t know. It’s exciting.”

The Sun cooled off and finished making 34.6 percent of their 3-pointers (9-of-26). It’s only the first preseason game and exhibition performances are not necessarily a barometer of real games. Opponents will get tape on the Sun’s new players and Miller’s system and find counters.

Any signs of liveliness — and offense — is an oasis for Connecticut and its fans after three years of trudging through basketball hell.

“Everyone has got more than a yellow light (to shoot 3s),” Miller said. “I don’t think we took a lot of contested 3s. … Our percentage is too high tonight. It’s too high (a percentage of our field goal attempts, 60).

“We’ve got to have more balance and more paint-touches, but you saw the floor spacing tonight that we were talking about. And, again, Chicago gave those to us tonight. They gave us some 3s and we weren’t bashful taking them, but we probably need to pass some of them up and have better balance.”

Connecticut’s four starters from last season all scored in double figures — Bone (15 points), Bentley (14), Alyssa Thomas (11) and Jasmine Thomas (10).

Chiney Ogwumike, the 2014 WNBA Rookie of the Year, dressed but didn’t play. She had microfracture surgery on her right knee in January 2015 and missed all season. Sun general manager Chris Sienko said she wouldn’t play during the preseason as they don’t want to take any chances with her health.

Connecticut plays host to the San Antonio Stars tonight (7 p.m.)
