Region 17 BOE Appoints Acting Superintendent

The Regional School District 17 Board of Education is pleased to announce that it has voted to appoint John Sullivan as Acting Superintendent of Schools beginning on a full time basis in March.

Dr. Sullivan earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Special Education from Southern Connecticut State University, a Sixth Year Diploma in Educational Administration from the University of Connecticut and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Bridgeport.

Over the duration of his career, Dr. Sullivan served as a high school principal in both Nantucket, Massachusetts and Wilton, Connecticut. He went on to serve as Superintendent of Schools in Westbrook, Connecticut and later retired as Superintendent of Schools for Unified School District II. In retirement, Dr. Sullivan has served as Interim Principal at East Lyme High School for two years.

John will replace Gary Mala who, as previously reported, has accepted the position as Superintendent of Schools for the Avon Public Schools. Dr. Sullivan will serve as Acting Superintendent until such time the Regional School District 17 Board of Education selects a permanent replacement for Mala.
