Arts and Technology Symposium takes place this weekend in New London

Here's a staggering concept: every great idea you yourself were thinking of having in the oft-interlocking fields of art and technology — will happen right here in New London this weekend. You don't have to think of a thing. Just drink it all in.

Yes, "Open All Ports," the 15th Biennial Symposium on Arts and Technology, takes place today through Saturday on the campus of Connecticut College in New London. Presented as always by the school's Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, the many-splendored gathering boasts paper sessions, performances, exhibitions, and new works at the intersection of arts and technology.

The symposium's keynote address, "Adventures in BiodiverCITY," will be delivered Friday morning by digital pioneer Natalie Jeremijenko, director of the xDesign Environmental Health Clinic at NYU, and the former director of Yale's Engineering Design Studio. Jeremijenko has been named one of the top 100 young innovators by the MIT Technology Review.

If there's a problem with the symposium, it's that there's so much compelling stuff going on you might need three or four of Yourself just to take it all in. (Maybe that's an idea for next year.) Note that some of the events are "off campus." A tangential exhibition opens Friday at the Hygienic Art Galleries in New London, and the symposium-ending performance, "Experimental Sound Show," takes place at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Spark Makerspace in New London.

In the meantime, visit conncoll.edu/cat/symposia2016 to block out your scheduling grids — and go forth and feed your imagination.
