Southington remains No. 1 in The Day's Top 10 football poll

Southington remains the top-ranked team in The Day's Top 10 state coaches' poll.

It could also be the last time.

Southington (9-0) has been No. 1 despite earning six of 13 first-place votes.

Second-ranked New Canaan (9-0) has been receiving the other seven first-place votes.

Southington has a 374-372 point edge over New Canaan because Southington is ranked no worse than second on any ballot.

New Canaan has four second-place votes, one third and a fourth.

The Rams play third-ranked Darien (10-0) on Thanksgiving for the FCIAC championship. The Blue Wave are ranked one spot ahead of New Canaan on two ballots. The Rams, then, would likely pick up at least four points with a win and pass Southington.

It's also not out of the question that Darien would pass the Blue Knights with a win.

Southington plays host to Cheshire (8-2), which must win to make the Class LL playoffs, so yeah, next week's Top 10 might look different.

Locally, sixth-ranked Ledyard (10-0) and Valley Regional/Old Lyme (10-0) are the only teams receiving votes. Both have already secured postseason berths.
