ECC officials far from united on new alignment

The future of the Eastern Connecticut Conference grew more uncertain Wednesday following a meeting of athletic directors from selected schools, mostly representing the Medium Division.

While sources would not divulge the specifics of the discussions, two used the term "a mess" when attempting to find a solution to the current situation.

A group of eight schools scheduled a meeting for Friday to perhaps finalize a "new" ECC consisting of Norwich Free Academy, Fitch, Ledyard, New London, Waterford, Montville, Stonington and Bacon Academy. The consensus among the group suggested that East Lyme, entertaining an offer from the Southern Connecticut Conference, would stay as well to create a new nine-school ECC.

Developments from Wednesday, however, indicate such a conference is hardly imminent.

"It's not for everyone," one source said Wednesday.

Another said discussions of a new ECC consisting of Small and Medium schools only has been raised, thereby ousting Ledyard, New London, NFA, Fitch and East Lyme.

The meeting of the eight aforementioned schools is still set for Friday.

Administrators from eight other ECC schools met Tuesday to discuss the league's future as well. Sources said there was a general consensus that little can be done until other members announce their intentions.

Sources said that administrators from Griswold, Killingly, Lyman Memorial, Plainfield, St. Bernard, Tourtellotte, Wheeler and Woodstock Academy attended the meeting Tuesday.

East Lyme officials and coaches will meet with Southern Connecticut Conference representatives tonight.
