H.S. softball roundup: Day belongs to Wheeler's Paride (20K, grand slam)
Montville — Jenn Paride pitched a six-hitter with 20 strikeouts and went 4-for-5, including a grand slam in the top of the 10th inning, as the Wheeler High School softball team beat Montville 7-2 Wednesday to remain unbeaten in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division.
“She kept us in the game and gave us a shot as she always does,” Wheeler coach Joe Cawley said about Paride.
Kylie Baker hit an RBI single in the 10th inning to give the Lions (10-1, 5-0) a 3-2 lead.
Katie Banta and Hannah Meyers each had two hits for Montville (7-5, 3-2).
In other games:
• Claire Hurley had three hits, including a two-run triple, as Waterford rallied to beat Griswold 7-3 in the ECC Medium Division. The Lancers trailed 2-0 headed into the top of the fifth inning when Ally Pezzolesi (two hits) had a two-run single to highlight a three-run inning. They scored four in the sixth thanks to Hurley’s triple and sacrifice flies by Jodi Weiss and Sara Buscetto (double). Kazi Walker pitched a complete game, seven-hitter for Waterford (10-3, 6-0). Griswold is 10-3, 4-2.
• Carly Puckett drove in the game-winning run on a single, as East Lyme scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Bacon Academy 3-2 in the ECC Large Division. Bacon took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth, when East Lyme's Mikaela LoPriore walked and scored on a double by Nicole Bowen. Hannah LeBeau tied the score at 2 with a double and scored the winning run on Puckett’s hit. LoPriore was the winning pitcher. East Lyme is 9-2 overall, 4-1 in the Large Division. Bacon is 1-10, 0-5.
• Erin McBride went 4-for-6 with eight RBI as Norwich Tech beat Grasso Tech 29-14 in a Constitution State Conference game. Abbey Pater was 4-for-6 with a grand slam for Norwich Tech and Samantha Martinez led Grasso Tech with three runs scored and three stolen bases.
• Jayden Delaporta scattered four hits over three innings and Caroline Taber struck out 10 in four innings of relief to earn the win as unbeaten Fitch topped Ledyard 4-0 in the ECC Large Division. Jackie Lewis singled and had a run and an RBI and Taylor Wolfgang had two hits, including a solo home run, for the Falcons (13-0, 6-0), ranked second in the New Haven Register Top 10. Also, Jonell Herbert had two hits. Ledyard is 5-7, 1-5.
• Mia Shallcross hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to give St. Bernard a 3-1 win over Windham in the ECC Small. Sophie Nelson pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Saints (6-6, 3-3). Neisha Rodriguez went 2-for-2 for Windham.
• Woodstock scored three runs — two unearned — in the sixth inning to rally past Norwich Free Academy 4-3 in the ECC Large. The Wildcats lost despite holding a 9-3 edge in hits. Brittani Majcher went 3-for-3, including a solo home run, while Megan Weir was 3-for-4 and Beth Fleming doubled for NFA (8-3, 3-3).
• Liz Richard belted a two-run home run for Old Lyme in a 13-4 loss to Old Saybrook in the Shoreline Conference. Kyra Teixeira had two singles and a double for the Wildcats. Emily Santamaria had a three-run home run for Old Saybrook.
• Sydney Guari had two hits, two RBI and a run as Killingly downed New London 13-3 in the ECC Medium. Riley Barnes had two hits and scored, Nikita Terry hit a solo home run and Kenya Capers doubled for New London (0-9, 0-5).
• Cameron Dreher tripled, drove in two runs and scored twice as Stonington beat Plainfield 9-3 in the ECC Medium Division. Rhianna Maynard (two runs), Abby Flakus and Dreher had two hits each for Stonington (9-4, 3-2).
