Ledyard — It seems illogical, at best, to suggest that the kid they call “Ice” could spend so much time on fire. But if Isaiah Campbell was any hotter during the first half Wednesday night, he’d have needed to stop, drop and roll.

Campbell scored all 17 of his points during a first-half clinic for Ledyard High School. The Colonels ran to a 35-9 lead and eventually posted a 76-46 win over Fitch, maintaining their lead in the Large Division of the Eastern Connecticut Conference.

“Some people were saying after the first game that ‘Ice’ was a non-factor for us and that you shouldn’t even guard him,” Ledyard coach Dave Cornish said. “We told him that if they play off you, make them pay for it. We know Ice is a very good player. Sometimes he’s overshadowed by the other guys, but he’s very good.”

Campbell led the Colonels (12-3, 5-1) with 17 points. Isiah McNair had 15 and Steven Fletcher had 11.

The victory helped Ledyard avenge a loss to Fitch (9-6, 4-3) last month.

“We talked to the kids in practice (Tuesday),” Cornish said. “We had four days off because of the weather, but it was ‘hey, guys, it’s Fitch.’ They knew what we meant.”

Clearly. Ledyard led 17-2 and 28-8 early.

“When we played them the first time, we believed we could beat them,” Fitch coach Alick Furtick said. “We came out tonight and absolutely (soiled) ourselves. We knew it was a smaller court and they’d press and there would be some turnovers. But the way we handled it was we absolutely panicked. We didn’t come close to matching their intensity.”

Eddie Volkerts led the Falcons with 30 points.

Ledyard has a 1.5-game lead over Bacon Academy in the division.

    • Furtick said Volkerts has given a verbal commitment to Casper Community College in Casper, Wyoming. He will sign his letter of intent in April.

“One of their coaches has ties to Hartford and knows about Eddie and likes this game,” Furtick said.

Casper has sent several players to Division I and three to the NBA over the years. It is also the alma mater of former vice president Dick Cheney.
