Montville baseball is back on track with five straight victories

Montville — The following are things one may associate with Montville High School's baseball team:

    • Sound fundamentals.

    • Wins (and lots of them).

    • Playing for (and winning) state championships.

An early-season loss to fellow baseball magnate Waterford? Now that’s not Montville.

Montville is back to its old self again, as seen during its 10-2 win over New London in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division game Friday afternoon. It was the Indians’ fifth straight win, and they’ve scored at least five runs in each of them.

“I tell these guys all the time that I never want them to forget that (Waterford) game,” first-year Montville coach Steve Stonoha said. “‘That should be your motivating factor because that’s a pretty big blemish on your record. Really, what it came down to was our defense in that game. … We can’t have games like that.”

Waterford beat the Indians 10-1 on April 9. Montville, the defending ECC champion — and Class M runner-up — hadn’t been embarrassed that badly since being thrashed by Fitch 15-2 on April 12, 2010.

“Coming from being part of the team last year, being part of the big impact that we had, it was really tough because we hadn’t experienced a loss like that (in a while),” Montville senior TT Bowens said. “We couldn’t let it happen again, so we have to practice with extra reps. Mental reps, physical reps, everything.”

Bowens allowed three hits over six innings with 10 strikeouts and two earned runs for the Indians (7-1, 3-1), ranked 10th in the GametimeCT.com/New Haven Register Top 10 poll. The Day's All-Area Player of the Year in 2015 also had two hits, including a double, and scored three runs.

Tommy McDonald had two doubles and three RBI for the Indians and Eric Ross went 3-for-3, including a double, with a run and a RBI. Jeremy Sagun also scored twice and had a RBI.

New London (4-4, 1-3) has been trying to gain its footing, having lost three of its last four. Defense figured to be its strong suit after its pitching staff was ravaged by graduation, but the Whalers aided Montville by making too many fielding errors.

“We’re a little young,” New London coach Mike Wheeler said. “We’ve got some seniors with experience, but there’s a lot of youth out here, whether it’s first-time varsity players or just young people in general.

“This is probably the first game where we were out of it a little bit, but even so, we were at least fighting back. We didn’t just give up. I love that attitude the kids have.”

Jeremy Santos had two hits, including a solo home run, for the Whalers. Freddy Pacheco scored and Elijah Martinez drove in a run.

Montville loaded the bases with one out in the first inning on Bowens’ single and two hit batsmen. Bowens scored on a passed ball and Ryan Champagne smacked a line drive off the glove of pitcher Rob Parra to score Sagun.

The Indians scored three in the second inning. McDonald had an RBI double, Ross scored on a Sagun’s fielder’s choice and Quentin Duperry came home on a passed ball.

“Our bats are starting to come around a little bit,” Stonoha said. “We struggled early on at the plate. We ran into a very good pitcher against Waterford (Michael Burrows, who pitched a two-hitter), and since then, we’ve been putting the barrel on the ball and doing all the right things in practice and in the game.”
