    H.S. tennis: Reigning champ Zuczek is ECC boys' tourney No. 1 seed

    St. Bernard's Alex Zuczek, the two-time defending champion, is the top seed for next week's Eastern Connecticut Conference boys' tennis tournament, which will be held May 24-26 at East Lyme and Waterford.

    Zuczek, a junior, will open against No. 32 Hugh Sokolski of Waterford. The No. 2 seed is Waterford's Camiren Carter while East Lyme's Eric Wu is the No. 3 seed and Waterford's Mike Gianakos is seeded fourth.

    In doubles, East Lyme's Mukesh Kurumbail and Davon Chen are seeded No. 1 and Waterford's Evan Burdsall and Dylan Vitale are seeded second.

    The first and second rounds will be held on Tuesday, May 24 at 3 p.m. (singles at Waterford, doubles at East Lyme) before the remainder of the tournament switches to East Lyme for the quarterfinals and semifinals on May 25, starting at 3 p.m., and the finals on May 26 at 4 p.m.

    In match action: 

    • St. Bernard accepted a pair of forfeits in doubles during a 5-2 victory over Montville. The Saints (3-12) picked up singles wins from Zuczek and Sean Crowe along with the No. 1 doubles team of Patrick Mahoney-David Abraham. Rohit Sinha and Gianppierre Aquina won singles matches for the Indians (3-12).

    • Waterford completed its regular season with a 7-0 win over Woodstock in the ECC Large Division. Carter, Gianakos, Sokolski and Adam Pinch won their matches for the Lancers (13-3, 10-2) as did the doubles teams of Burdsall-Vitale, David Perez-David Hausmann and Hugh Mugavero-Dominic Bruno. 

    Girls

    • Despite picking up wins for its top two singles players, Old Lyme was beaten by Coginchaug 5-2 in the Shoreline Conference. Keelin Hurt won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles for the Wildcats (12-7) while Emily Braut won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

    Doubles — David Abraham-Patrick Mahoney (St. Bernard), Eric Gu-Mark Powers (East Lyme).
