    New London — Mitchell College advanced to the championship series of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference baseball tournament by beating Colby-Sawyer 7-1 in the final of pod play on Sunday.

    The Mariners (30-11) opened the day with a 9-3 loss to Colby-Sawyer to force the deciding game. Mitchell will host the best-of-three series against Johnson & Wales beginning Thursday.

    Michael Ficocelli, East Lyme’s Owen Robbins and Jacob Quiles homered for Mitchlel in the deciding game. Ficocelli was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI and Montville’s Robbie DelaCruz had three hits and scored three runs. DelaCruz also had a two-run double in the first game.

    Quiles (6-3) went the distance for the win, pitching a five-hitter with six strikeouts and three walks.

    Sun waive three

    • The Connecticut Sun announced on Sunday that the team has waived guards Leigha Brown, Rennia Davis and Shey Peddy.

    Brown was acquired by the Sun in a trade with the Atlanta Dream prior to the 2023 season. She appeared in 25 regular season games for Connecticut last season, with 21 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists. Davis signed a training camp contract with the Sun on February 2 and Peddy signed a training camp contract with the Sun on February 16.

    Men’s track

    Brendan Mellitt and Ethan Bush of Connecticut College won titles on Saturday in the New England Division III Championships at Mt. Holyoke. Mellitt won the 5000 meters in a time of 14:43.56 and Bush won the 10,000 in 31:09.51.The Camels finished fourth with 36 points.

    Jayson Firmin was second in the triple jump (14.12 meters), Ellis Iurilli-Hough was fourth in the 3000 steeplechase (9:28.09), Chris Koskinen was sixth in the pole vault (4.52),

    • Ian Naff (400 meters, 48.68 seconds) and Josh Banks (pole vault, 16-5.5) earned runner-up finishes for Coast Guard Academy at the Division III New England championships on Saturday. The Bears tied for 11th overall with 29 points, earning nine All-New England honors, including East Lyme graduate Brendan Fant as a member of the sixth-place 4x800 relay team.

    Naff’s time was an outdoor best in the event, placing him fourth all-time in Coast Guard history. He also ran 22.10 seconds in the 200 to place eighth overall and earn his second All-New England distinction of the meet.

    In the pole vault, Banks matched the height of winner Ben Drummey from Southern Maine, but Drummey earned the win on misses. Both Banks and Drummey set a facility record.

    Also for the Bears, Paul Hobbs (31:53.61) and Jack Davidson (32:15.07) were fourth and fifth in the 10,000. The 4x800 team of Fant, Christian Gottlieb, Ryan Weston and Brian Green posted a time of 7:53.72 to finish sixth.

    Women’s track

    • Emma Wheeler of Connecticut College won her second straight heptathlon title as the Camels finished sixth at the Division III New England meet on Saturday. Wheeler won with 4,511 points. She won the shot put (12 meters) and javelin (33.78 meters).

    The Camels also won the 4x800 relay with Grace McDonough, Abby Fernald, April Schilling and Alexa Estes winning in a school-record 9:11.30, the fifth fastest time in meet history.

    McDonough was second in the 1500, Abby Williams was third in the 5000, Edin Sisson was fourth in the 10,000 and Addie Fuller was eighth in the 3000 steeplechase.

    • Sophomore Claire Semerod was second in the 5,000 in 17:39.76 and Coast Guard Academy earned 12 All-New England honors at the Division III New England meet on Saturday.

    Also for the Bears, senior Sadie Olson was named All-New England in three events, finishing sixth in the discus (128-2), eighth in the hammer (151-3) and eighth in shot put (38-9). Sophia White was fourth in the 800 with a school record 2:13.18, Allie Wildsmith fifth in the high jump (5-3.75), Madison Garrigus eighth in the pole vault (11-1) and Alaina Stonebraker eighth in the 100 (12.66).

    The Coast Guard 4x400 team of Ella Besant, Grace Flynn, Stonebraker and Makenna Topp finished third (3:57.08).

    H.S. baseball

    • Grasso Tech was held to two hits but beat Vinal Tech 9-6 in a Connecticut Technical Conference game on Saturday. Winning pitcher Gabe Grossman and Reis Whitfield had hits for the Eagles (8-6). Grasso scored seven runs in the bottom of the third without a hit. Vinal Tech made seven errors in the game, including a three-run error in the third. Grasso also capitalized on 11 walks.

    • Fitch lost to La Salle Academy of Rhode Island 9-2 on Saturday. Trace Morales had two hits for the Falcons (5-8) and Vinny Morabito allowed just two earned runs over 6.2 innings in relief.

    H.S. girls’ tennis

    • Stonington remained unbeaten with a 7-0 win over Windham/Windham Tech on Saturday. Grace Duggan, Marcella Hamm, Marina Lewandowski and Gwen McGugan won their matches for the Bears (9-0).
