Old Lyme sweeps way to Shoreline lacrosse titles

New London — This was a date Old Lyme actually circled a year ago when it was beaten by rival Old Saybrook in the Shoreline Conference girls' lacrosse tournament championship game.

"Losing was hard," coach Emily Macione said, "so from the get-go this season our goal was to make it back to the championship game and make sure to get that last goal in our favor."

The Wildcats did that Thursday night ... and then some.

Sloane Sweitzer and Sydney Cowell each finished with four goals and one assist as top-seeded Old Lyme routed No. 2 Old Saybrook 16-6 in the title game at Connecticut College. It completed a sweep for the school's lacrosse program as the second-seeded boys defeated No. 4 Morgan in the night's first championship game 17-5.

"Everyone came ready to go," Macione said. "We were clicking in way that I haven't seen this season. Old Saybrook's always a challenge, but we had everyone playing our best."

Lauren Quaratella added three goals and an assist, Anna Mesham two goals and two assists, Abby Berger two goals and Hannah Guenther 15 saves for Old Lyme (17-1).

The boys' team, meanwhile, won its second straight title behind six goals and three assists from Henry Hunt and four goals and two assists from Ian Humphreys.

The Wildcats (16-2) defeated Morgan 8-7 in the teams' last meeting on April 28, but coach Mike Murphy said his players did well in few specialty areas to create some distance between them and the Huskies. One of those strengths came from Gus Cummins, who won 14 of 21 faceoffs.

"The faceoffs give you more possessions. We also rode well, prevented them from clearing the ball," Murphy said. "We were playing real well in those areas.

"This is great, especially for the seniors. I'm graduating nine seniors. I'm sure the girls do, too, but the boys love the hype (of playing at Conn College); the field is nice, we get a little music going for warmups. Getting through this game was great."

Gray Colvin added four goals and Matt Cushman and Andrew Willard each had a goal and an assist. Freshman goalie Jimmy Rollins made 10 saves in the win.
