Fitch's Hobert commits to Division I Sacred Heart

Jonell Hobert wore a Fitch High School softball shirt a few times this summer and had people comment on it.

“They say, ‘You won the state championship,’ and I would say, ‘How do you know?’” Hobert said. “… It’s kind of surreal. You know it happened, but you don’t. You don’t understand what you did. You don’t understand the weight of it.”

Hobert, Fitch’s shortstop during a 27-0 season this spring and a member of The Day’s All-Area Team, has been recognized in another fashion, too.

Hobert, who will be a senior, gave a verbal commitment this week to play softball for Division I Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.

She makes the third member of Fitch’s championship team to commit to a Division I program. Pitcher Caroline Taber, who graduated, is on her way in a few weeks to Princeton University. Another rising senior, catcher Taylor Wolfgang, is slated to play for Bucknell.

Hobert said she hopes to major in either the sciences or law.

“I’m psyched,” Hobert said. “I really loved the overall atmosphere of the school, as well as the coaches. It’s the type of place I can go and feel at home and work my butt off and get some playing time. It’s going to be a lot of competition, fighting for a spot as far as starting goes.”

Hobert, who grew up in Florida but moved to Connecticut when her dad Gary became general manager of a Mystic restaurant, Pizzetta, said because she’s moved before she didn’t feel the need to go to school that far from home.

As for her summer, she played for the Connecticut Charmers 18-and-under Gold team along with Taber and Wolfgang.

Fitch won the Class L state championship, its second in two years, on June 10, topping Masuk 2-0 at West Haven High School. The Falcons finished ranked No. 1 in the state poll.

“We were together all summer, so it wasn’t like it was ending,” Hobert said. “The group of girls on that (high school) team, you thought it can’t get much better. Then this summer, now it really couldn’t be better. Then we played our last summer tournament and the tears started coming.”
