H.S. football: Ledyard holds off Bacon 8-6 for first win

Ledyard — Stanley Green returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown just 1 minute, 23 seconds into the second half and Ledyard held on for an 8-6 high school football victory over Bacon Academy on Friday night at Bill Mignault Field.

It was the first win for interim head coach Mark Farnsworth.

The winning points turned out to be a two-point conversion pass from Max Ebdon to Ken Turner.

Bacon (0-3) made things interesting when quarterback Paul Chasse scrambled eight yards for a touchdown with 2:16 remaining, but Mish Piper was stopped short of the goal line by the Ledyard defense on the conversion try.

"These kids are young but have a lot of fight in them," Farnsworth said. "We have got to get better up front ... we have a lot of work to do ... but a win tonight will go a long way for their spirits of our team."

The Colonels (1-2) won despite only 25 yards of offense, but limited the Bobcats to 142 total yards in a game that featured five turnovers and nine sacks.

    In other games:

    • Matt Sapere passed for 213 yards and three touchdowns while Garrett Burdick had another strong all-around game as Valley Regional/Old Lyme remained unbeaten with a 37-13 victory over Morgan in a Pequot League Sassacus Divison game in Clinton.

Burdick finished with five receptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns. He also intercepted a pass, kicked a 23-yard field goal and made four of five extra point conversions. The Warriors (3-0, 3-0) also had two other big interceptions in the game. Cole Ensigner broke a scoreless tie 1:51 into the second quarter when he picked off a pass and ran 68 yards for a touchdown and 7-0 Valley/OL lead.

Then, leading 23-13 early in the third quarter, an Ernest Jean-Pierre interception led to a Sapere 1-yard run to make it 30-13 before Sapere threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to John Beloacca on fourth down late in the third quarter to turn the game into a rout.

Dan Stecher had another big game for the Warriors, rushing 13 times for 101 yards.
