    H.S. roundup: Montville's Morth wins Outstanding Wrestler award at Yates Invite

    Lebanon — Montville had three champions and finished second at the Casey Yates Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday.

    Joel Morth won at 132 and was named the most outstanding wrestler at the event. Montville, which finished with 167 points, had champions in Noah Caskey at 126 and Emanuel Diaz at 182. Platt of Meriden won with 217 points.

    Montville also got a second place from Sam Kury at 145, third-place finishes from Dane Concascia (195) and Quinn Bond (103) and fourth-place fihnishes from Ian Anderson (138) and Jack Varley (113). 

    In other matches:

    • Fitch had a pair of champions to place eighth in the Colter Abley Midseason Classic at Middletown. Jarod Kosman defeated Xavier's Ronin Marino 12-1 to win the 113-pound title while Dakota Grover beat Simsbury's Jackson King 10-1 in the 195 final. Austin Robertson (132) and Kevin Berardi (285) each placed fourth for the Falcons.

    • Waterford went 0-3 at the Ellis Tech Duals, losing to Foran 66-9, Branford 47-31 and host Ellis 69-11. Logan Smith (106) went 3-0 for the Lancers (6-10), recording a pin and a technical fall, while Eric Zane (113) went 2-1 with a 33 second pin against Branford.

    • East Lyme went 0-4 in the John Williams Duals at Rockville, losing to East Hartford 84-0, Avon 78-3, Rockville 42-24 and Windsor 54-15. Greg Stewart (220) went 3-1 for the Vikings (0-17) while Ashton Fontaine (113) went 2-1 and Corey Filewich (170) went 2-2.

    • No. 10 Ledyard swept a quad meet on Friday night, defeating Conard 63-6, Middletown 35-29 and host Guilford 37-36. The Guilford match actually finished in a tie, but the Colonels (14-2) won on the sixth tiebreaker (most technical falls, 1-0). Joey Millbach (106), Theran Vanasse (138), Jake Millbach (160), Collin Crader (170), Mike Sullivan (182) and Danny Contino (220) each went 3-0 Ledyard while Gavin Wiliamson (145) was 2-1.

    Boys' basketball

    • Seth Thomas scored 14 points as Norwich Free Academy won its fourth straight game with a 51-39 nonconference win over RHAM. Tyler Sebastian added 13 points for the Wildcats (7-1), who led 27-19 at the break.

    Swimming

    • Williams School defeated Moses Brown 59-25 as Jordan Legg (200 freestyle, 50 free), Will Jarrett (200 IM, 100 backstroke), Joe Sullivan (100 butterfly, 500 free) and Cyrus D'Arcy (100 free, 100 breastroke) won two events apiece. Jarrett, D'ARcy, Legg and Grace Linhares teamed up to win the 200 medley relay while Jarrett, Amar Viswanathan, Alessandra D'Arcy and Elizabeth Li won the 400 free relay.

    • East Lyme defeated NFA 110-67 in an ECC meet on Friday as Jack Mucciarone won the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.79) and 100 free (53.65) for the Vikings and was part of two winning relay teams. East Lyme also picked up individual wins from Daniel Rubio-Ejchel (50 free, 25.29), Ben Prouty (diving, 207.60 points), Jack Zhang (100 butterfly, 59.99), Eain Goolsbey (500 free, 5;16.23), Rajiv Manohar (100 backstroke, 1:09.47) and Robert Hahn (100 breaststroke, 1:12.19). Jeffrey Ng won the 200 IM (2:16.93) for NFA.

    Indoor track

    • Ledyard's Herman Winston won a pair of events as the Colonels finished third at the Shoreline Invitational in New Haven. Winston won the 55-meter dash (6.69) and the 300 (36.77). In girls' results, Ledyard's Claudia Jackson was third in the pole vault at 8-0. 

    Ledyard boys also got a fourth-place finish from Zach Solomonson (300, 38.42), a fifth-place finish from Collin Wiltshire (55 hurdles, 8.68) and a sixth-place finish from James Smith (long jump, 19-2.5). The 4x800 relay team of Sean Healy, Ian Kamperschroer, Zak King and Nate McCracken (8:43.40) and the 4x400 relay team of Andrew Laconico, Solomonson, Kamperschroer and Preston Poulton (3P:48.21) both finished fifth. 

    • Fitch's Alex Schwindt cleared 12 feet and placed third in the boys' vault during the East Coast Invitational at Providence.

    Boys' fencing

    • East Lyme swept an ECC tri-meet from host Waterford and Griswold, winning both the foil and epee competitions. Waterford beat Griswold in foil and Griswold beat Waterford in epee. Waterford's Sam Amadeo (28 points) was the high scorer in foil as was East Lyme's Ian Peitzsch (30) in epee. Peitzsch also went 6-0.

    • Ledyard swept an ECC tri-meet in foil by defeating Bacon Academy 7-2 and Fitch 6-3. Fitch beat Bacon 6-3. There was no epee competition.

    Girls' fencing

    • Waterford defeated East Lyme and Griswold in foil (East Lyme defeated Griswold), while Griswold went 2-0 in epee with East Lyme beating Waterford. In foil, Waterford's Madeline Christensen scored 28 points and in epee, Griswold's Nicole Niles had 30.

    • Fitch had a perfect day in an ECC tri-meet, defeating Bacon 6-3 and Ledyard 5-4 in foil, and defeating Ledyard 8-1 in epee. Ledyard beat Bacon 5-4 in foil.

    Hockey

    • The NFA Redhawks co-op scored three goals in the third period to defeat Bolton 5-3 on Friday night. Max Tapia had two goals for the Redhawks (6-3) while Bryan Guetens added one goal and one assist, Nick Wright and Maren Lancaster had two assists apiece, Andrew Bannon and Brayden LoVetere each scored a goal and goalie Ben Amor stopped 22 shots.
