    H.S. roundup: Ledyard finishes second at Bristol Central wrestling tournament

    Bristol — Four Ledyard wrestlers won individual titles and seven reached the finals as the Colonels placed second in the Bristol Central Invitational on Monday.

    Ledyard, ranked ninth in the latest state coaches' poll, finished with 253.5 points, just behind No. 3 Bristol Eastern, which won the tournament with 261 points.

    Theran Vanase (138 pounds), Mike Sullivan (182), Danny Contino (220) and Richard Mullaney (285) all won titles for the Colonels. Vanase earned a 16-7 major decision over Moses Marino of Berlin, Sullivan pinned Jammar Mighty of Harding in 3 minutes, 47 seconds, Contino earne a major decision over Mike Lancaster of Avon 10-1 and Mullaney pinned Paul Brown of Mohonasen (N.Y.) in 5:30.

    Bo Nguyen (120), Jake Millbach (160) and Collin Crader (170) added runner-up finishes for Ledyard while Tony Christians (195) placed fourth, Joey Millbach (106) and Gavin Williamson (145) placed fifth and Ty Miller (113) placed sixth.

    Girls' basketball

    • Mackenzie Burke's driving layup as time expired in overtime gave Norwich Free Academy a 48-46 nonleague victory over RHAM. Burke finished with 14 points for the Wildcats (8-4), who were led by Makayla Poirier-Vaughters with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Hailey Conley added 13 for NFA.

    • Hamden (7-3), whose only three losses have come against No. 4 Trumbull, No. 6 Mercy and No. 8 East Haven, scored the final 10 points to pull away in the final four minutes and beat Ledyard 47-31 in a nonleague game. Sarah Serbascewicz led the Colonels (4-6) with 15 points while Johnay Burns added 15 rebounds and Julia Lavin finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

    • Cheney Tech outscored Norwich Tech 15-8 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 37-31 win in a Constitution State Conference game. Vanessa Gumbs led Norwich Tech (3-7) with eight points.

    Boys' basketball

    • Tyler Sebastian scored 22 points as NFA won its fifth straight game with a 60-49 win over Classical (R.I.). Seth Thomas added 19 for the Wildcats (8-1), who led 28-27 before pulling away in the second half.

    • Cheney Tech held Norwich Tech to only nine points in the first half en route to a 36-29 victory over the Warriors in the Constitution State Conference. Jared Neal scored 13 points to lead Norwich Tech while Michael Delonde scored a game-high 14 for Cheney Tech.

    Hockey

    • Conner Morton and Luke Slater each had a goal and an assist to lead Bolton/Coventry/Rockville to a 4-1 victory over the NFA Redhawks co-op. Hunter Desaulnier scored an unassisted goal for the Redhawks (5-4) while goalie Ben Amor stopped 22 shots.
