    H.S. tennis: Top-seeded Stonington girls reach Class S quarters

    Stonington — Top-seeded Stonington opened play in the CIAC Class S girls' tennis tournament with a 7-0 win over Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II rival Waterford in the first round on Saturday.

    The win was the Bears' third over the No. 16 Lancers this season. Stonington opened the season with a 5-2 win on April 5 and also beat them 6-1 on May 3.

    Waterford (12-6) started the day with a 6-1 win over No. 17 Ellington in a qualifier at Stonington.

    The Bears (16-0) will host No. 8 Coginchaug in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

    The highlight of the Stonington-Waterford match was at No. 1 doubles where Brielle Fratoni-Jaskiewicz and Hannah Middleton-Krancberg beat Catherine Yao and Stacey Tasoulas 6-2, 6-4 a day after needing over two hours to beat them 6-2, 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-5) in the ECC doubles title match on Friday.

    Gabby Dellacono, Charlotte Johnstone, Makenzie Sadler and Margot Goodman won singles matches for the Bears as did the teams of Holly Foster-Phoebe Townsend and Ainsley Johnstone-Cassie Onorato.

    Boys

    • East Lyme got off to a strong start in the Class M tournament at Yale, advancing three of its doubles teams into the round of 16 as well as singles player Eric Wu. Wu, the No. 13 seed, defeated Steven Porter of New Fairfield 7-6 (4), 6-0 in the first round and Nick Halkias of Berlin 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 in the second round. He will play No. 4 Matthew Sydney of Weston when play resumes on Tuesday.

    In doubles, the Vikings' teams of No. 4 David Chen-Eric Gu, No. 14 Finn Power-Jonathan Tan and unseeded Conrad French-Charle Lyden will moved into Tuesday's third round. Chen-Gu won their only match against Barlow's James Bebon-Trevor Feltman 6-1, 6-2 while Power-Tan defeated Lukas Garcia-Ahmed Talovic of Suffield 6-0, 6-0 and French-Lyden won twice, defeating Avon's Shane Jones-Ian Stapleton 6-1, 6-4 in the first round and Waterford's David Blagdon-Hugh Mugavero 6-1, 6-2 in the second round.

    Chen-Gu will face No. 13 Rob Scalese-Jacob Zito of East Haven in the third while while Power-Tan will play No. 3 Cameron Edgar-James Hastings of Weston and French-Lyden will take on top-seeded Reid Brostoff-Jesse Kallins of Weston. Waterford's top doubles team, No. 6 Adam Pinch-David Perez, won its only match 6-3, 6-1 over Brookfield's Ian Garcia-Fazil Quaisar and will meet No. 11 Justin Kemmling-Benjamin Kennure of Berlin in the third round.

    Also for East Lyme, singles player Ashish Josh beat Barlow's Jake Bernard 6-3, 6-0 in the first round before losing to No. 16 Grady Tarzian of Weston 6-2, 7-5 in the second round.

    • In the Class S tournament at Conard High in West Hartford, ECC champion Alex Zuczek, a finalist in 2016, was one of four ECC players to advance to Tuesday's round of 16. The top-seeded Zuczek defeated Andrew Russo of Holy Cross 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and Granby's Dan Heiderger 6-1, 6-0 in the second round. Zuczek will play No. 16 Nate McCracken of Ledyard, who beat Morgan's Garrett Johnson 6-0, 6-1 and Ellington's Lucas Van Deventer 7-6 (1), 6-3.

    Also advancing were Stonington's Jacob Stiger and Sean Bessette. Stiger, the No. 11 seed, beat Westbrook's Binak Cecunjanin 6-0, 6-0 and Rich Denardo of Holy Cross 6-0, 6-0. He will face No. 6 Joseph Bowman of Canton in the third round. The unseeded Bessette, meanwhile, defeated East Catholic's Patrick Roth 6-4, 6-1 in the first round before upsetting No. 10 Kyle Johnson of Ellington 6-3, 6-3, in the second round. He will play No. 7 Andrew Ray of Nonnewaug in the third round.

    In doubles, two Old Lyme teams were among four to reach Tuesday's third round. Old Lyme's sixth-seeded team of Adam Czarnecki-Jeffrey Zhang beat Nonnewaug's Sam Cotter-Max Lovig 6-3, 7-5 in its only match and will play No. 11 Phillip Hartzell-Austin Herzy of Westbrook next, while No. 13 Brady Sheffield-Conner Wyman defeated Litchfield's Matt Bove-Michel D'Aversa 6-0, 6-2 and Ledyard's Samuel Lahti-Blake McHale 6-2, 6-0 and will play St. Bernard's unseeded team of Kyle Keefe-Shine Yang in the third round. Keefe-Yang defeated Shepaug Valley's Joe DeMilio-Drew Doerwald 6-4, 6-3 and No. 14 Enes Cecunjanin-Bailey Noack of Old Saybrook 2-6, 6-0, 10-8. Ledyard's No. 7 team of Chris Charette-Trevor Hutchins also advanced with a win over Cromwell's Cameron Irvine-Ewan McNeil 6-2, 6-0 in their only match and will face Randy Philavong-John Zuffelato of Ellington next.
