H.S. football: East Lyme rallies for 28-20 road win over Barlow

Redding — East Lyme trailed Barlow 14-6 at the half on Friday night when coach Rudy Bagos entered the locker room and was greeted by some frustrated faces.

"(The players) said it felt like they were down three scores," Bagos said. "And then I reminded them it was only 14-6. I said, 'Listen, we just took their best shot and we're only down eight points. If we're going to do this, we're going to do this together.' "

And that's exactly what East Lyme did. The Vikings (4-1) took the opening drive of the second half to tie the game, then took control in the second half for an impressive 28-20 nonleague football victory over the Falcons.

Chris Salemme threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Haase and Tommy Haase ran for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14. East Lyme went up 21-14 when Salemme connected with Dylan Hatajik from 34 yards out early in the fourth quarter (Matt Malcom converted the extra point).

Barlow (3-2) scored moments later to cut the deficit to 21-20 (the Falcons failed on the conversion), but with time winding down and East Lyme driving again, Barlow let Isaac Tomblin score from 11 yards out with two minutes remaining to get the ball back. The Vikings' defense, however, turned the Falcons over on downs and ran the clock out.

Salemme finished 5 of 9 for 97 yards and three TDs, the first an 11-yard strike to Sam Highman in the second quarter. Tomblin finished with 114 rushing yards on 21 carries while Highman had two receptions for40 yards and the TD.

    In other games:

    • Quarterback Jacob Sylvia had a big night as Ledyard snapped a three-game losing streak with a 43-0 nonleague victory over Bassick of Bridgeport. Sylvia threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth for the Colonels, who improved to 2-3.

    • Griswold rallied for a 14-10 win over Montville, scoring the winning touchdown with five minutes left on short run by Bryce Mileski. The Indians (2-3) scored on the game's first play when Nik Angell broke free for a 52-yard touchdown for a 6-0 lead. Montville then added a pair of safeties to make it 10-0, but couldn't dent the Griswold defense again.

    • Windham held off Waterford for a wild 38-32 nonleague win. Trailing 38-19 after three quarters, the Lancers (0-5) scored twice in the fourth — Peter Turello's 10-yard touchdown pass to Max Mazzella and Marquis Smith's fumble recovey in the end zone — but missed out on a chance to tie or win the game when Windham's Brandon Perdomo intercepted a pass with 1:16 left.

Turello completed 16 of 30 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns, both to Mazzella, who had seven receptions for 124 yards. Windham (1-3) had a pair of 200-yard rushers as Natanael Barbosa rushed for 274 yards on 27 carries (two TDs) and Aaron Spencer had 220 yards on 11 carries for two TDs. He added a third on an11-yard pass from Jovanny Almodover.
