Lots of movement, but same teams in The Day's Top 10 state coaches poll

A voter in The Day's Top 10 state coaches’ poll wrote the following when submitting his ballot this week:

“This week was insane. I reshuffled this deck four or five times before I threw my hands up in the air.”

Second-ranked Southington, No. 3 West Haven and No. 12 South Windsor all lost last Friday during Week 8, throwing this week’s Top 10 into disarray.

The top 10 teams remained the same, however, albeit with a lot of movement.

    Oh, there's a second-place tie, too.

Two-time defending CIAC Class LL champion Darien (6-0) once again received all 13 first-place votes.

    And then the fun began.

Ansonia (7-0) and Greenwich (6-0) moved into a second-place tie with 330 points each. Ansonia received six second-place votes, Greenwich four.

St. Joseph (6-1) leapt three spots up to No. 4. It received two second-place votes.

Windsor (6-0) and Masuk (7-0) are fifth and sixth, respectively. Masuk received the other second-place vote.

Shelton (6-1) moved up three spots to No. 7 after beating West Haven, 38-28. Shelton has played six teams with five-or-more wins and beaten five of them.

Middletown (7-0) is eighth and West Haven (6-1) ninth.

Southington (6-1) dropped from second to No. 10. It gave up two touchdowns in the final two minutes, 16 seconds of a 27-20 loss to East Hartford (6-1). It snapped the Blue Knights’ 41-game regular season winning streak. Their last in-season loss was to Hall, 49-37, on Oct. 19, 2013.

Fitch (7-0) remains the only area team receiving votes. The Falcons are 16th overall.
