No. 2 Darien takes down No. 1 St. Joseph 22-7

Trumbull — Darien's defense held top-ranked St. Joseph to 148 yards total offense for a convincing 22-7 win Saturday afternoon in a game involving the top two teams in The Day's Top 10 state high school coaches’ poll.

The second-ranked Blue Wave (3-0) gave up five first downs and a touchdown on St. Joseph’s opening drive. They allowed just four first downs the rest of the game, none in the second half.

Will Bothwell, Charles Hunter and Alexander Quirk each had a sack for Darien, the three-time defending CIAC Class LL champion. Jackson Peters also had an interception.

The Cadets (2-1) opened the season ranked No. 1 in The Day coaches’ poll after dominating New Canaan, 28-0, on Sept. 8. The next poll will be released Monday evening.

New Canaan was the No. 1 team in the GameTimeCT/New Haven Register Top 10 preseason media poll. St. Joseph took over that ranking after its Week 1 win.

Cooper Hancock completed 19 of 25 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown and scored on a 2-yard run for the Blue Wave. His top receivers were Peter Bredahl (five catches, 109 yards) and T.J. Cornacchia (four catches, 58 yards, one touchdown).

Andrew Lucas also scored on an 11-yard run for Darien.

Maryland-bound quarterback David Summers completed 12 of 26 passes for 116 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown pass to Jaden Shirden, for St. Joseph (2-1).
