On these cold January days, I find it heartening to look forward to the summer and the return of the water taxi, which had a successful trial run in September 2014.

The opportunity to travel from one side of the river to the other by boat was a real treat, especially for those of us who do not get out on the water regularly. Seeing the land from the perspective of the water gives a better understanding of the area's history and geography and a greater appreciation for the river and sea that binds the region together. It was wonderful to see so many locals and tourists enjoying a trip on the water and exploring the waterfronts of New London and Groton.

Much effort and planning by the Heritage Park Steering Committee went into last year's water taxi project as well as financial support from the cities of Groton and New London and from Mystic Seaport and Cross Sound Ferry.

But more fundraising is needed to continue running the water taxi in 2015. I strongly encourage our elected representatives in Hartford to continue their efforts to get state support so that the water taxi can run again.
