Millstone stresses safety within the workforce

    xxxxx

I am writing to you in response to your article, “Former contractor says NRC has ignored problems at Millstone,” (April 15). I am the president of the New London-Norwich Building and Construction Trades Council, representing thousands of union construction workers. Every year, hundreds of those union workers go to Millstone to support their scheduled refueling outages and normal operations.

In my experience, Dominion encourages everyone working at Millstone to raise concerns. Not only is it encouraged, it is expected. The expectation to report a safety concern is clearly laid out in training that everyone at the station needs to pass to work there. It is reinforced in shop meetings and by senior management. Dominion has created an environment where personnel feel free to raise safety concerns without fear of retaliation, intimidation, harassment, or discrimination.

When I visit the Dominion Millstone Power Station, I see a site filled with dedicated workers who are concerned about the safety of the public and who take action to ensure that safety is maintained. I'm proud to be associated with Millstone. The men and women I represent who perform work on site, and are local residents and members of the building and construction trades' council, are proud as well.
