Zillow school scores important but murky

The Day did not fully and accurately report on the Wednesday Groton RTM presentation on new schools in the article, “Groton RTM stops attempt to ask voters if they want budget referendum,” (Sept. 10).

An emphasis on new schools is important, but I mentioned that when prospective residents assess our schools, a tool people use is a well-known real estate website like Zillow.com, and it gave Fitch High School a “4” out of 10 ranking.

Stonington High School is 7 and New London is 2 by way of comparison. Dr. Graner has told us twice that Fitch has national prominence. I suggested we see and find out why that is not reflected in such a significant website. Nowhere did I state, as was reported, that Groton schools fare poorly on Zillow. If fact, I knew exactly how each school is rated so it is something I would not say.

For instance, Butler, which is in my district 6, is rated an “8,” our only school to receive such a designation. Most others are mid-pack or better. How Zillow arrives at these scores I cannot say, but I certainly think they should be a major concern for our executives since we know prospective residents certainly use them.
