Will support leaders who support New London's Chief Ackley

This letter is in response to David Collins’ column, “Chief Ackley’s future separates the New London mayoral candidates,” (Oct. 4).

Although I often enjoy his sardonic humor, it was unfair and inaccurate to dredge up the problems of the past four years and to continue to place the blame on Chief Margaret Ackley.

It is very difficult to be surrounded by imposters, people who pretend to be somebody they are not, and people who are stubborn and unwilling to change; whether or not they are part of the old guard. To them I say, “Good riddance!”

In the chief I see courage, support, strength of character, and excellence.

A true leader faces decisions that will not make her popular among peers. Chief Ackley was publicly exonerated for a good reason.

One has only to read the headline and police reports in recent weeks to see the changes and improvements, including three major drug busts and the beefing up of the staff of the police department with new hiring and promotions.

Upon the return to her post last May, I have witnessed positive changes within my neighborhood and my apartment complex; reflected in peace, quiet, mutual respect and cleanliness. City leaders willing to be supportive and work alongside Chief Ackley will have my vote in November.
