    New plurality could change politics

We are 800,000 strong. There are more of us then Democrats. There are more of us than Republicans. We are independents and unaffiliated voters and we now have the plurality in most every town and city in Connecticut.

This makes some wonder why the duopoly (Democrats and Republicans) is still controlling the election process.

Local Democrats and/or Republicans make up town committees (appointed by local Democrats and Republicans) and register voters. Primaries are controlled by the political parties although it is interesting to note that at one time Connecticut Republicans allowed independents to vote in its primaries. This was back in 1955. The state sued. The matter went to the U.S. Supreme Court which decided that open primaries were indeed legal. Now both parties have closed them.

Is it time for independents and unaffiliated voters to take charge and make our election system less political? Can we break the partisanship which is destroying our county? We will be having this conversation March 1 in Old Lyme.

Everyone is welcome and can get information: at Independents United for Progress
