Don't let Trump set immigration policy

Because The Day’s editorial, “Up to Republican Congress to rein in Trump,” (March 12), seriously questions the mental competence of President Donald Trump in his ability to serve as the nation’s president (and commander-in-chief of the nation’s military), then certainly this newspaper must agree that the City of New London and the State of Connecticut must protect otherwise law-abiding but undocumented immigrants, residing and gainfully employed within New London and Connecticut, from harassment and excesses that might be exercised by the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement under the executive orders of Trump.

For example, forcefully separating children from their parents is vicious and cruel. Does this not affirmatively answer the question asked in the front-page article on “Sanctuary City?” Immigration should be regulated by an Act of Congress, where many representatives, senators, and their staffs jointly cobble together legislation. It should not be left in the hands of one man whose mental state is in serious question.
