Plenty of ways to cut Montville school dollars

The article titled, "Montville readies cut of three teachers," (April 19), had more twists than a "roller coaster." First, the so-called cut of $600,000 to last year's school budget was only a reduction of the proposed increase. The school budget was actually increased by $100,000 over the prior year. This year, Superintendent Brian Levesque wants an increase of another 1.2 percent, or about $700,000 more.

The following student count numbers were provided by Levesque and indicate that by September 2017 Montville will have one teacher for every eight students. Total students last April was given as 2,248 for all schools in Montville, this when reduced by the 165 June 2016 high school grads and the projected loss of another 142 students who will graduate in June 2017, will leave about 1,941 students attending all of our schools. The internet shows Montville has a FTE of 245 teachers, plus about 70 teacher helpers. This indicates we will have one teacher for less than eight students. Cutting teachers is always hard to do but so is paying $69,000 each for teachers we no longer need.
