Taxes too high for marina business

Several weeks ago I was still recuperating from the shock of our current real estate tax bill from the city of New London. Curious, I looked to see what we had paid in past years. The mill rate went from 25.31 in 2013 to 44.26 in 2017 — a 43 percent increase! These are trying times for the city as well as the state. However, the mayor and City Council should consider some fiscal restraint. The average occupancy rate for marinas in Connecticut is 65 percent. Fewer boaters means less fuel purchased, fewer repairs and equipment sold. If this trend continues perhaps there will be no marinas left in New London to pay the exorbitant tax bill.
