Major sewer plan for Old Lyme should require referendum

The decision by Old Lyme's Water Pollution Control Authority to abandon the long standing sewer avoidance policy and instead implement a centralized sewer policy was wrong. Unanswered questions, including the impact to ground water levels due to the export of water from our aquifer to a treatment plant in New London have never been shared with town residents. It is unfortunate that First Selectman Bonnie Reemsnyder has allowed the WPCA to pursue this course of action.

Being true to course the next action/injustice that our town leaders will undertake will be to schedule a Special Town Meeting, advertise only as required by law, to approve and fund this flawed proposal. This is typical. Only those residents with a special interest will attend. Will another injustice occur?

Old Lyme residents must insist that any plan put forward by the WPCA involving pollution control be put to the voters of Old Lyme via a referendum vote and not a rigged Special Town Meeting sponsored by special interest groups in our beach communities.

It is time to hit the reset button on the WPCA and Town Hall.
