Send tolerance message using work of art

This is in response to the letter, “Signs of the times spur polite dispute among Old Lymers,” (Jan. 1).

The concern of conveying a message of tolerance while respecting historic traditions might find a resolution in a sponsored design competition where design artists might submit a proposal portfolio for either a two-dimensional signage or a three-dimensional sculpture conveying a message of tolerance for current concerns as expressed on the signs in question at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme. An “Art Prize” committee including, but not limited to, representatives of the church would determine the winner, and the design would be presented for approval to the appropriate Old Lyme historic preservation oversight committee.
