Two more weekends left for water taxi service in New London, Groton

New London — There are only two more weekends remaining to take a ride or a tour on the Thames River Heritage Park Water Taxi this summer.

The water taxi service will end its second season of operation on Sept. 17, 2017. The service connects Fort Trumbull in New London to the downtown New London Historic Waterfront District and Fort Griswold in Groton, and runs Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The water taxis are authentic Navy launches that were used to transport service members from larger ships to shore. They are the central feature of the Thames River Heritage Park, which was designated a state park by the state of Connecticut in 1990. The Thames River Heritage Park is a collection of national and historic sites along both shores of the Thames River that tell the stories that shaped our nation during the past 400 years.

Ticket prices are: adults: $10; children ages 4-12 and active military members: $5; children 3 and under: free.

Heritage sites within easy walking distance of the water taxi stops include, in Groton, the Avery-Copp House, the Ebenezer Avery Homestead, Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park and the Subvets World War II National Memorial East and, in New London, in addition to Fort Trumbull are the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse, the Custom House Maritime Museum, the Shaw Mansion and the Hempsted Houses.
