    United Way seeks volunteer readers

Gales Ferry — The United Way of Southeastern Connecticut is looking for volunteer readers to participate in the annual Read for the Record event on Thursday, Oct. 19.

Volunteers will meet for an orientation session prior to the reading at 8:30 a.m. at the Gales Ferry office, 283 Stoddards Wharf Road, before bringing their supplies to their assigned school.

This year's book is "Quackers" by Liz Wong, a tale of understanding about a kitten who grows up believing he's a duck until he meets another kitten. All copies of the book are donated to local schools as a gift from United Way.

The annual event, sponsored by Jumpstart, brings together millions of people to highlight the importance of early literacy and language programming for children.

Interested volunteers and schools should call (860) 464-3323 by Thursday, Oct. 5. Space is limited, and early registration is suggested.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
