Deb and Peter Alvord, owners of the Shoreline Sewing Machine Company in Old Saybrook (formerly of Niantic), have teamed up with New London Adult and Continuing Education and English language teacher Andrea Fenton to provide a sewing class for English language learners.

Six students from South Korea, the Dominican Republic, Syria and China recreated a notebook cover using sewing and edging machines and materials provided by the Alvords; Deb taught the class, and Peter was on hand to help assist and repair machines.

The class was set up for English language learners with extensive previous sewing experience, who are often limited in their ability to work due to language barriers. The class allows them to continue their craft while building their English skills.
