Time-lapse photos show rapid rise of Mohegan Park water tank

Norwich — Anyone who has driven past the construction of the new 87-foot-tall water tank on Park Center Road in Mohegan Park would have noticed the steady progress made since work started in September.

By using a time-lapse camera positioned atop a nearby utility pole, Norwich Public Utilities has condensed the four-month job by contractor DN Tanks into two minutes, with a rapid slide show of images showing the rise of the $3.1 million water tank that will replace a former 5-million gallon tank at the site.

The slide show is posted at bit.ly/NPUwatertower on the NPU website.

The new 2.5-million gallon concrete water tank is taller and narrower than the old steel 1971 tank, which was demolished last summer. NPU also recently built a 1-million gallon tank at the Deep River Reservoir property in Lebanon. By spreading major water supplies into smaller tanks, water circulation is increased, reducing stagnation and improving water quality, NPU officials said of the project.

The Mohegan Park tank was funded through the state’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund, with 92 percent of the cost, $2.87 million, in a low-interest loan, and 8 percent, $249,512, in a grant.

The new Mohegan Park tank is expected to be completed and operational by mid-spring, NPU officials said.
