Four rescued after powerboat capsizes off Waterford, Niantic

East Lyme — Four people were rescued from the waters off Millstone Power Station in Waterford on Saturday morning after their 21-foot power boat capsized and sank.

Two U.S. Coast Guard vessels and a boat from the South East Marine Patrol responded to the call of people in the water around 10:53 a.m. All four were safely pulled from the water by a civilian watercraft before being transferred to the SEMP boat which then brought those rescued back to shore, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

There were no children on board and all four people were wearing life jackets, the Coast Guard said in a release later Saturday. There were no injuries. The capsized boat was flagged as a navigational hazard and the owner was working with a salvage company to remove it, according to the release.

Drowning is the No. 1 cause of boating fatalities, the Coast Guard said, and it reminds all boaters to wear a life jacket.
