    Local roundup: Valley/OL's King earns top state coaching award

    Tim King, who led the Valley Regional/Old Lyme cooperative football team to the first state title in program history, has been selected to receive the Doc McInerney Male High School Coach of the Year by the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance.

    King and Haddam-Killingworth volleyball coach Rich Langer, the Female Coach of the Year choice, will be honored at the 74th Gold Key Dinner on Sunday, April 26, at the Aqua Turf Cub in Stonington.

    King, who was a member of St. Bernard's Class M state championship team in 1978, recently completed his 18th season at Valley/OL. The Warriors went undefeated for the second straight regular season, defeated Bullard-Havens 34-0 in the Class S Large semifinals and then stunned perennial power Ansonia in the final, 21-20, scoring 14 points in the final four minutes to finish 13-0.

    H.S. swimming

    • John Moody won the 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke and swam on the winning 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay for Fitch/Stonington in a 98-80 victory over Sheehan. Dakota Williams took the 100 fly for Fitch (4-0) and Patrick Nowak won the 100 breaststroke.

    • Steven Boyd and Fred France each won a pair of events as NFA/Ledyard beat Waterford 103-79 in an ECC meet. Boyd won the 100 freestyle (1:02.33) and 200 freestyle (2:13.42) and France won the 50 freestyle (26.92) and 100 butterfly (1:11.61). Jack Wheeler also won the 100 breaststroke for NFA/Ledyard (1-1, 1-1). Jacob Hotsky, Matt Patton, Dan Clark and Kyle Waters won events for Waterford (0-3, 0-3).

    • Ryan Dumais won a pair of events as East Lyme beat Windham/RHAM/Coventry 96-82 in an ECC meet. Dumais won the 200 freestyle (2:02.23) and 500 freestyle (5:23.65). Ethan Opsahl won an event and was on two winning relay teams and Benas Kirvelevicius and Mitch Ryan also won events for the Vikings (2-4, 2-1). Ryan Kirkpatrick won a pair of events for Windham (2-2, 2-1).

    Women's hockey

    • Steph Izzi and Cassie Hunter had a goal and an assist each as Connecticut College beat Colby 3-2 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Alexa de la Guardia also scored, Kelsie Fralick made 27 saves and Ashley Antcil and Amanda Bogue each had an assist for Conn (9-2-3, 4-1-2).

    Men's hockey

    • Connecticut College scored five goals in the third period to rally past No. 10 Amherst College, 6-4, in the NESCAC. Sebastian Meltzer scored the go-ahead goal at the 7:39 mark while Ryan Mowery scored his second goal of the game and Greg Liautaud added the final tally to close out the scoring. The Camels improved to 6-5-2, 3-3-1.

    H.S. indoor track

    • The Fitch boys' 4x800-meter relay team finished fifth at the Yale Invitational. Conor O'Donnell, Matt Kerst, Daelon Morgan and Cameron Wilhelm had a time of 8:27.56.

    College field hockey

    • UConn coach Nancy Stevens has been named the NFHCA National Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

    Stevens, the sport's all-time winningest coach at the Division level, led the Huskies to their second straight NCAA championship. Stevens has a 413-25-8 record in 25 seasons at UConn and 28 Big East championships.
