    Local roundup: New London completes perfect regular season

    Killingly —New London High School completed its fourth undefeated regular season under coach Craig Parker, beating Killingly 64-48 on Tuesday in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division boys' basketball game.

    The Whalers improved to 19-0 overall and finished 10-0 in the division. They last finished undefeated in 2010-11 on the way to winning the CIAC Class L state title.

    Parker, in his 21st year as coach, was optimistic about his team's chance to run the regular-season table prior to the start of the season.

    "To be honest with you, I looked at the schedule and thought it was a possibility because I thought we were a pretty good team," Parker said. "I didn't really expect it to happen. ... I thought we had a shot.

    "We limped across the finish line. It wasn't a sprint."

    Collin Sawyer led the Whalers with 23 points while Tyrel Martinez (12), Seth Lake (11) and Major Roman (10) also scored in double figures.

    In other games:

    • Landon Peabody scored 22 points as Waterford beat East Lyme 60-38 in the regular-season finale for both teams. Kyle McComic scored nine for Waterford (16-4) while Christian Brown (14) and J.T. Mullins (10) scored in double figures for East Lyme (1-19).

    Girls' basketball

    • Mya Villard had 16 points as second-seeded Cromwell downed No. 3 Old Lyme, 73-43, in a Shoreline Conference semifinal. Cromwell will play top-seeded Morgan in Friday's final at Wilbur Cross. The Huskies beat No. 4 East Hampton in its semifinal, 39-28. Abby Stone scored 23 points and Julia Strycharz 10 for Old Lyme (16-6).

    Women's basketball

    • Mitchell College advanced the New England Collegiate Conference tournament semifinals with an 84-65 victory over fifth-seeded Wheelock at the Yarnall Athletic Center. The fourth-seeded Mariners took a 43-36 halftime lead, led by as many as 22 points and extended their winning streak to five straight. Jessica Shepherd had 24 points, a career-best 11 rebounds and seven assists while Amanda Garcia had 22 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks and Diamond Thomas added 11 points, nine rebounds and a career-high 10 assists. Dazjavia Williams had 13 points and 13 rebounds for Mitchell (13-12), which visits top-seeded Regis College (20-5) Friday night.

    • UConn-Avery Point won by forfeit in its Region XXI tournament game against Quinsigamond Community College. The Pointers led 44-11 at halftime before play was stopped due to injuries. Chelsea Alfonso and Carynn Bartolucci each had 11 points and Briana Padewski added 10 points and six rebounds. The Pointers (11-4) play in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday against Bunker Hill Community College.

    Men's basketball

    • Mitchell bowed out in the quarterfinal round of the NECC tournament, losing at fourth-seeded Becker, 80-75. Senior Joshua Ford, a two-time NECC Player of the Year, ended his career by scoring 17 points and adding seven rebounds while junior Donavan McClean had 20 points and senior Parris Hill added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the fifth-seeded Mariners (12-13), who trailed by 10 points at halftime.

    • Nichols College captain Irving Eggleston, a junior from East Lyme, was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference Player of the Year, sharing the honor with Endicott's Kamahl Walker. Eggleston leads the team in scoring at 18.5 points per game. The Bison won the regular season title with a 17-1 record and earned the top seed in the conference tournament.
