    Local roundup: Conn swimmer Mike Fothergill still adding to his collection

    Shenandoah, Texas. - Connecticut College sophomore Mike Fothergill finished eighth in the 100-yard backstroke in 49.65 seconds Friday at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championship, earning first team All-America honors.

    Fothergill, from Medford, Mass., had a pair of honorable mention All-America performances in relays earlier in the meet.

    Also for the Conn men, Loring Bowen was 12th in the 100 backstroke and George Tilneac 11th in the 200 butterfly to earn honorable mention All-America honors.

    On Thursday, eight Conn swimmers earned honorable mention All-America honors for their relay results.

    Bowen, Kirk Czelewicz, Tilneac and Fothergill placed 13th in the men's 400 medley relay in 3:19.73. The women's 400 medley relay team of Sarah Nappo, Charlotte Nixon, Anna Peterson and Sam Pierce was 16th in 3:53.27. In addition, Bowen was 10th in the 100 butterfly (48.41), also receiving honorable mention All-America honors.

    H.S. swimming

    • Fitch/Stonington's Dakota Williams is ranked in a pair of events at today's State Open meet at Yale University. Williams is the third seed in the 100-yard freestyle (46.61 seconds) and fourth in the 50 freestyle (21.27). Williams finished second in both events in the Class LL state meet earlier in the week.

    H.S. basketball

    • Eastern Connecticut Board No. 8 officials will referee both CIAC Class LL basketball championships today at Mohegan Sun Arena. Cheryl Kraft, Kathy Allen and Walt Blanker will officiate the LL girls' game between No. 1 South Windsor and No. 2 Wilton beginning at 6:15 p.m. (Tom Sullivan will be the alternate). Tony Nocito, Greg Keith and Dave Cruz will then have the LL boys' game between No. 1 Fairfield Prep and No. 2 Westhill beginning at 8:15 p.m. (Alternate is Roger Warner).

    College wrestling

    • Coast Guard Academy senior Nate Giorgio, who finished fifth in the nation last week at 133 pounds to earn Division III All-America honors, was named a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American while five cadet-athletes were named to the 2015 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) All-Academic team.

    Giorgio, a civil engineering major, has a 3.36 grade point average for the Bears, who ranked 32nd in Division III with a team GPA of 3.24 to earn a team scholar award.

    Giorgio was joined by freshman Thomas Dalton (157), senior Steve Kidwell (157), senior Ben Greene (165) and sophomore Phil Azzari (197) on the NEWA All-Academic team.

    College softball

    • Erin Miller of Waterford was the winning pitcher in the second game of Eastern Connecticut State University's doubleheader, closing the Warriors' spring break trip to Winter Haven, Fla. Ninth-ranked Rowan won the first game 9-1 in five innings before Eastern came back with a 2-1 victory over Ramapo in the second game. Miller (3-1) combined with Samantha Valentine to strand 11 Ramapo baserunners. Eastern (7-3) scored both runs in the sixth on a two-run double by Sam Rossetti. Waterford graduate Alyssa Hancock had two of Eastern's two hits against Ramapo and hit .529 on the trip (18-for-34), with 10 runs, 25 total bases and 27 assists in 10 games.
