    Mitchell baseball sweeps doubleheader

    Winter Haven, Fla. — New London's Paul Martinez had a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings for the Mitchell College baseball team Sunday in the second game of its season-opening 12-3 and 10-4 doubleheader sweep of Emerson College.

    The wins were the first for new Mitchell coach Scott Kingston.

    John Apostolo struck out eight over five innings in the first game for Mitchell. He had two hits, including a home run, in the second game.

    In other games:

    • Merchant Marine rallied from a three-run deficit with four runs on one hit in the top of the sixth inning of the first game of its 8-7, 6-1 doubleheader sweep over Coast Guard. Riley Beecher hit a two-run double and stole home in the opener for Coast Guard (1-2). Mike Massaro had two hits, including a triple, in the second game.

    • Old Lyme's Ryan Fuller went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI to lead No. 22 UConn past No. 14 California, 3-1.

    College softball

    • Hayley Feindel pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts as Coast Guard beat Mount Union, 2-0. Haley also combined with Alex Rennie on a no-hitter in an 8-0, five-inning win over Wesley. Haley threw five strikeouts in that win for the Bears (2-0) and Megan Cook added three RBI.
