    Local roundup: East Lyme boys hand NFA first lacrosse loss

    Norwich — Dillon Jennings had a goal and two assists and Evan Opsahl and Zane Smallidge both scored twice as the East Lyme High School boys’ lacrosse team handed Norwich Free Academy its first loss of the season on Monday, 8-4, in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division game.

    East Lyme led 5-1 after one quarter.

    Kyle Bernard, Dylan Janavic, and Mason Pagan all had a goal and Aaron Dixon had an assist for East Lyme (4-1, 3-0). Ryan Janavic added 15 saves.

    Jaedon Brown scored twice for the Wildcats (3-1, 3-1) and Kyle Ton had two assists. Also, Cam Curland and Login Morin scored and Ben Thompson added an assist.

    Girls' lacrosse

    Alyssa Turchetta scored six goals while Rachel Marchini had five goals and two assists to lead Montville past Wheeler 20-7 in the ECC Small Division. Emily Kewer added two goals and three assists for the Indians (2-2, 2-2) while Karlee Rewers and Greta Cook each scored twice. Zoe Robert scored six goals for the Lions (0-2, 0-2).

    College honors

    • Mitchell College sophomore Brittany Fiederlein was named New England Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week in softball while freshman Samantha DelConte was named NECC Rookie of the week. Fiederlein made six starts and one relief appearance last week and went 4-2 with a 1.95 ERA. Three of those wins came in NECC play, including an eight-inning shutout against Becker. DelConte, a catcher, batted a team-high .520 and scored eight runs out of the leadoff spot last week. She hit safely in six of the eight games and recorded multiple hits in four contests, including a four-hit game against Fitchburg State.

    • The Coast Guard Academy baseball and crew teams placed a combined six cadet-athletes on the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Crew had senior Brynna Cooke (Marine and Environmental Science) and sophomores Laura Beck (Civil Engineering) and Megan Sackett (Electrical Engineering). Senior baseball players Andrew Lucak (Management) and Louis Simione (Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering) were each selected for the third time and were joined by sophomore Mike Jeffko (Marine and Environmental Science).

    • Southern Connecticut's Shatajah Wattely, a sophomore from Montville, was named Army National Guard/SCSU Athlete of the Week. Wattely set a school record in the 200-meter race (23.7 seconds) at the Mark Young Invitational at Yale, the third fastest time by a Division II sprinter in the nation this spring, and also ran a leg of the winning 4x100 relay team, which won in 46.76 seconds.
