    Hermanson-Szewczul win state two-man golf title

    Old Lyme - East Lyme's Bill Hermanson teamed with Dave Szewczul on Monday to win the Connecticut Two-Man Team Championship on Hermanson's home course, Black Hall Club in Old Lyme.

    Hermanson and Szewczul finished with a 36-hole total of 138 (66-72) and defeated Brent Dietz and Rob Violet on the second hole of a sudden death playoff. There were 96 teams in the event, which is held annually at Black Hall of honor of Hermanson, winner of nine Connecticut State Golf Association major titles and a 2012 inductee into the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame.

    Teams played four-ball (better ball) in the morning round and foursomes (alternate shot) in the afternoon round. The playoff also used the foursomes format and the Hermanson-Szewczul duo closed out the match with a par of the par-5 11th hole.

    Richard Wilczewski and Josh Cameron on Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton tied with for with Bret Lawrence and Rudy Hermstadt, each finishing at even-par.

    The CSGA returns to Black Hall in just over a month when it hosts the 113th Connecticut Amateur Championship in conjunction with the celebration of the club's 50th anniversary.

    Among the other locals, Scott Farrell of Black Hall teamed up with Brian Ahern to finish tied for 12th at 4-over 146 along with Tony Susi and James Lawler of Mohegan Sun CC. Also cracking the Top 20 was Ed Hilario of Norwich GC, who teamed with Shawn Hilario of Wampanoag CC to tie for 17th at 5-over 147.
